Being Baptised (or Christened, as it is sometimes referred to)
A christening is when your child is baptised into the Christian faith. It is a service of thanksgiving for the new baby, but it also marks a decision to start your child on the journey of faith, and asks for the Church's support. Godparents play a central role in providing this support. Many parents wish to have a church service for their new child, and we would be delighted to help you if you live in Seaton Sluice or New Hartley, are regular worshippers at one of our churches, or have a family connection to the parish. Baptisms normally take place at our regular Family Services at St. Paul’s or St. Michael’s, or at a specially arranged service at any of our three churches.
Baptism is a 'sacrament', a visible sign of God's love. In baptism, we are thanking God for his gift of life, and publicly acknowledging his love. We are acknowledging that we all need to turn away from the darkness of evil, and to make a new start with God. When you bring your child for baptism, you will be asked to declare publicly on behalf of your child that you believe in God, and that you will bring your child up to follow Jesus. You will be asked to answer on your child's behalf, that you have decided to turn away from everything which is evil or sinful, and to turn instead towards Christ. The declarations made by you and the child's godparents will be made in front of the church congregation. The Christian community will promise to support you, and to pray for you and your child.
You will need to contact the Rev. David Bowler on 0191 237 1982 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Two members of the Church will then arrange to visit you to talk through the options available. After this, one of the clergy team will visit you to confirm the date for your special service.
If, as an adult you wish to be Baptised, or to affirm the promises made on your behalf as a child, we welcome the chance to discuss your growing faith with you. It is usual for an adult to be Baptised by the Bishop at a service of Baptism and Confirmation, although there are circumstances when the vicar will baptise you.
